Via Director File (the one stop for Michel Gondry info on news), further details on Gondry's contribution to Tôkyô! have been revealed: actually we know the complete premise and get a Gondry-scribbled poster for good measure.
For starters, we already established that Tôkyô! is a project that involves three filmmakers and is a three short film split. Belonging to a new trend of collective short film compilations honoring some of the world's favorite metropolitin hubs, 07's Paris, je t'aime and the upcoming project New York, je t'aime, the two other directors joining Gondry are fellow Frenchman Leos Carax (who made the memorable Mauvais Sang and the very ambitious Lovers on the Bridge) and Bong Joon-ho who became a household fav after the release of his monster movie The Host. While their narratives are still unknown – they are now is post, and will try selling the film internationally at perhaps the Berlin film Fest market.
Not only a fan of the rubix cube but of comic books as well, Gondry based his Tokyo set story from a NYC-set comic book narrative. Entitled “Interior Design”, and written by Gondry and comic author Gabrielle Bell, this is based on Bell’s “Cecil and Jordan in New York” from “Kramer’s Ergot #5”. This centers on a girl (Ayako Fujitani) who, we learn in the midst of the story, is able to transform herself into a chair at will. Cecil is unhappy as Jordan's girlfriend, and fashions a more fulfilling and rewarding existence for herself as a chair/woman chimera occupying another man's living space.
