Texas-based Asian genre film specialists Well Go USA have made a two-picture pick-up deal with Fortissimo Films for Takashi Shimizu’s last pair of films – both Marco Mueller’s Lido selected items. Via their output deal with Variance films, look for the Venice Film Festival 2011 selected Tormented to be shown in theaters while 2010’s The Shock Labyrinth will probably go the direct to VOD route.
Gist: Wacko horror fantasy premise centres on a young boy whose family seems to be falling apart around him. The situation gets worse when he manifests a growing and dangerous friendship and reliance on a stuffed toy rabbit that comes to life. Is he crazy; is his sister alive or dead; is their storybook illustrating father going insane or are they all delusional? Shimizu ventures once more into the terrifying recesses of the mind.
Worth Noting: Director credit obviously goes to Takashi Shimizu, but apparently cinematographer Christopher Doyle took on a larger role than that of Dp.
Do We Care?: This is a first-time collaboration between Shimizu and Doyle and I’m thinking this is Doyle’s first time working with 3D — which appears (see trailer below) to have panned out well.
