Since when did Summit Entertainment become the new Dimension? With an upcoming slate chock-full of genre films there’s no question where the shingle is placing its proverbial chips. Following their acquisition of DC’s Red, Summit has secured the rights to Virgin Comics’ just released graphic novel The Leaves by Kevin J. Walsh.
The action thriller follows a world-renowned heart surgeon Max Mellick as he journeys to India to attend the funeral of a friend. While there he meets a Naadi fortune teller who tells him he will be responsible for the end of the world (the Anti-Vishnu if you will). In denial, he abandons his posh NYC life and girlfriend and tries to run away from his infamous fate.
Walsh will adapt his own work for the screen with Virgin’s EIC and awesomely named Gotham Chopra (son of famed spiritualist and company co-founder Deepak) producing along with CEO Sharad Davarajan. The union of the two companies is a match made in heaven of sorts. Says Chopra to Screen, “Mining the great mysteries and mythologies of India and nurturing them into fresh films for the world to see has become what we’re known for at Virgin Comics and in Summit and Kevin, we could not find better partners to take the next leap.”
Something to keep an eye on, Elizabeth filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is also one of the founding fathers of Virgin Comics – I’m not saying he’ll be directing this, just throwing it out there.
