#77. Winter’s Bone

Director: Debra Granik
Writer(s): Anne Rosellini and Granik
Producers: Alix Madigan and Anne Rosellini (Down to the Bown)

The Gist: Written by Debra Granik and based on a 2006 novel of the same name by Daniel Woodrell, this centers on 16-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence), who hails from a large family of Ozark meth cookers. When her no-good, methamphetamine-cooking father (John Hawkes) goes missing — after using the family home as collateral to post bond — Ree must either bring him back alive or prove that he’s dead. Otherwise the authorities will seize the family’s house, throwing Ree, her two younger brothers and their mentally ill mother out into the cold.….(more)

Cast: Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes.

Why is it on the list? With the addiction drama Down to the Bone (2004), Granik gave one women’s plight in the face of adversity. It won plenty of kudos, made Vera Farmiga’ career but tragically no one bothered to take notice, and now half a decade later, the filmmaker delves back into the same sphere – and we thank her for it. These comes equipped with Jennifer Lawrence – a brilliant young actress I discovered in The Burning Plain and John Hawkes who looks from he was born from rural America.

Release Date/Status?: A Sundance comp release followed by a domestic pick-up. Looks primed for an Autumn release.
