#10. Rust and Bone

Director: Jacques Audiard
Writer(s): Audiard and Thomas Bidegain
Producers: Martine Cassinelli (A Prophet) and Why Not Productions’ Pascal Caucheteux (Love and Bruises)
Distributor: Rights Available (Celluloid Dreams)

The Gist: Co-written by Thomas Bidegain, this is an adaptation of Craig Davidson’s Rust and Bone (a short story collection) and centers around Alain van Versch. He is 25 years old and lives in the North. He has no money and has never had any. When you’re young and alone, money is not a problem. It becomes one when the girl with whom you have had a child places it in your hands. Now, obviously, Ali has a problem: his name is Sam, and he’s five years old. Running on and running out of ideas Ali calls his sister who lives in Antibes in the south…(more)

Cast: Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenarts, Celine Sallette and Bouli Lanners

List Worthy Reasons…: The naughts were good to us with Jacques Audiard – he handed us back to back to back cinematic gems in Sur mes lèvres (2001), The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) and Special Jury Prize winning A Prophet (2009). Audiard is arguably among the best French filmmakers in the biz, so how will he fare when he dabbles a bit more in CGI and with a spiked production budget north of 20 million? And will Oscar-winning lead actress in Cotillard knock it out of the park like Emmanuelle Devos did in Sur mes lèvres? We don’t expect him to compromise on his trademark marriage of style and suspense.

Release Date/Status?: Still in production, we doubt that this will be ready for Cannes, but Venice would be a sure bet.
