#93. The Great Gatsby

Director: Baz Luhrmann
Writer(s): Luhrmann and Craig Pearce
Producers: Luhrmann, Lucy Fisher, Catherine Knapman, Catherine Martin and Douglas Wick
Distributor: Warner Bros.

The Gist: Based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald first published in 1925, this follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton)…(more)

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Tobey Maguire, Callan McAuliffe, Gemma Ward, Amitabh Bachchan and Jason Clarke

List Worthy Reasons…: Here are the list of pros: the roaring 20s, classic novel, great cast, award season conflicts (Dicaprio will go head to head again with his performance in Django Unchained), holiday release date, bootleg and a filmmaker in dire need of a career boost especially after the colossal bore known as Australia.

Release Date/Status?: Opens wide on December 25th.
