Move aside Crystal Lake. A little horror film down under was taken to the AFM last week and was good enough not to be bought for domestic distribution, but rather, good enough to have its remake rights sold. Coming from a strong contingent of peer horror filmmakers from Australia, Joel Anderson‘s Lake Mungo is being developed, and may one day be made into a feature by the folks at Paramount Vantage.
Dubbed as a supernatural mystery, the original film belongs to a long-standing tradition of Aussie indie horro films and was showcased at the Sydney Film Fest. This tells the story of a teenager whose apparent death sets off a series of paranormal events. Frightened by what appears to be otherworldly activity, her family discovers secrets about their daughter as well as what lurks beneath Lake Mungo. The original film was shot in a sort of faux-documentary style, but the new version will be a narrative adaptation.
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison along with Adrian Guerra and Anderson, the film’s original creator and director, brought the project to Vantage and are set to produce.
