For fans of Valeska Grisebach, patience is a virtue. The Bremen born filmmaker, is known for her meticulous process, hence the long gaps between films. 2001’s Mein Stern and 2006’s Sehnsucht were followed by her 2017 breakout Western (read review) – which premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section. Steeped in realism, her cinema is slow, simple, favors the long takes and she works with non-professionals who melt into the background. Her fourth feature is more than ready. Here is Everything We Know So Far … about Valeska Grisebach’s The Dreamed Adventure aka ‘Das Geträumte Abenteuer.’
We first heard of the project when it was making the funding rounds back in June of 2022. Landing producers from multiple Euro nations, production would appeared to have taken place in mid to late 2024 with a border backdrop of Bulgaria.
In the border region between Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, a woman enters into a deal to help an old friend. She follows the hero on his adventure and enters dangerous territory where she is confronted with her own desires.
Western’s Syuleyman Letifov joins Yana Radeva and Velko Frandev.
Grisebach re-teams with Western folks in Director of Photography Bernhard Keller and Film Editor Bettina Böhler, and her producing teams include Komplizen Film’s Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski and Maren Ade, with co-producers in Panama Film’s Lixi Frank and David Bohun, Miramar Film’s Mila Voinikova and Kazak Productions’ Jean Christophe Reymond.
One thinks that we could see a pull-rug from the Berlinale following what happened with Mascha Schilinski’s Sound of Falling landing in the competition section for the Palme d’Or. All eyes are on Cannes, but Berlin programmers will want this for the Golden Bear competition.
