It was an exciting weekend at the box office.  Wall-E and Wanted both
surpassed expectations to bring the weekend 20% ahead of the same frame last
year.  Both also managed to tap in
to their own markets without stepping on anyone’s toes, be those toes tank
treads or perfect little Angelina piggies.

Wall-E took the
crown with over $62 million to become the third biggest opening in Pixar
history (behind
Finding Nemo and The Incredibles) and the animation
studio’s ninth consecutive number one debut.  Like last year’s
Ratatouille, Wall-E is the year’s most critically acclaimed release and audiences are just as happy
too as the film averaged an A from CinemaScore.

Wanted on the other
hand is mostly liked but has some detractors.  Still, it surpassed all expectations to become the 6th biggest R-opening of all time and, if the Sunday estimates hold, it will be
Angelina Jolie’s biggest debut of her career.
Wanted also
managed a larger per screen average than
Wall-E.  I
guess everyone’s a winner.

Well, everyone, except for Mike Myers.  The Love Guru is officially this summer’s second bomb after May’s Speed Racer.  The second week haul fell over 60% and
the film is sure to fall out of view very soon.  Meanwhile, Steve Carrell’s
Get Smart held up well in its second week after pulling in
solid numbers all week.  The 10-day
total now stands $77 million compared with
The Love Guru’s $25 million.

The week’s biggest per screen average went to Kit
Kittredge: An America Girl
for the second
week in a row.  It fell off more
than 50% but still managed an average of $21K and should be able to make a big
splash next week when it expands past its five screens.

Many indie efforts enjoyed healthy climbs below the Top 10,
from the now defunct PictureHouse’s Mongol (+8.5%) to the Anand Tucker directed When Did You Last See your
Father?
(+71.1%) as well as Werner
Herzog’s documentary,
Encounters at the End of the World (+192%).  The week’s top art house debut went to IFC’s The Last Mistress, which platformed on just two screens to the tune
of $17K per screen.

NEXT WEEK: If it’s Independence Day, then Will Smith can’t
be too far.  Smith’s Hancock smashes into theatres and hopes that the lack of
critical support for his film won’t stop the masses from choosing a lovable
robot over a drunken superhero.  Smith also has to worry about the fallout at home as
Kit
Kittredge
, which coincidentally stars his
daughter, Willow, goes wide to 1800 screens.
