When Life Gives you Oranges, Make…: Sean Baker Embarks on “The Florida Project”

For what will become his sixth feature film, film format friendly auteur Sean Baker is moving over to the east coast Sunshine State for the aptly titled The Florida Project and the best news of all: he’ll be going back to 35mm. With casting underway, it was announced that filming will begin this summer with Baker producing alongside plenty of former collaborators: his CRE Films partner Chris Bergoch, June Pictures’ Andrew Duncan and Alex Saks, Freestyle Picture Company’s Francesca Silvestri and Kevin Chinoy, and Shih-Ching Tsou. Darren Dean is executive producing.

Gist: Written by Baker and Chris Bergoch, this revolves around a single-parent family trying to stay afloat in these hard times, seen through the eyes of a precocious seven-year old girl and her rag-tag group of close friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility, and a sense of adventure.

Worth Noting: Not yet confirmed, but Baker will likely re-team with dp Radium Cheung (Starlet and Tangerine).

Do We Care?: Coming off what several (including our Nicholas Bell) consider his career best in the “priceless, beautiful, and emotionally rich” Tangerine, we’re big on a premise that belongs to the film worlds we might have seen in Beasts of the Southern Wild and George Washington and certainly reminds us of when he worked with little humans in Prince of Broadway.
