Some major Venice, TIFF, NYFF titles have been added to Sundance including high quality premium titles in Attenberg, Meek's Cutoff and Submarine. Gregg Araki will once again have had the chance to showcase his films at top fest on the circuit, his latest film Kaboom which was shown at Cannes and TIFF will find it's final fest presentation in Park City. Denis Villeneuve will deliver one extra push before the Oscars (Incendies is a top tier pick among all the nominees). Mumblecore member Joe Swanberg is also in the section but with a world premiere of his film.
Once they were ten. Now they are three. Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg, Robert Guédiguian’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Ruben Östlund’s Play have gone thru into the final round of the European Parliament LUX Prize.
The most internationally acclaimed film of the ceremony was without doubt Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg, and surprisingly the Academy decided to nominate it for only 4 awards. Just like her Best Leading Actress award in Venice, Ariane Labed claimed the only prize for the film. Nevertheless, the Film Academy decided to select Attenberg as the official submission of Greece for the 2012 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Of course, you need confident distribs such as the Strand Releasing folks to take on an atypical film such as Athina Rachel Tsangari's award-winnning Attenberg. Strand are planning a release sometime in the fall.
You can call IONCINEMA.com the "all things Attenberg channel." We profiled Athina Rachel Tsangari in our special American New Wave 25 series, we've updated you with films stills, we've highlighted how her film was selected at Venice and TIFF, and now in preparation for Venice (which officially begins today with the Black Swan reviews) we have the poster one sheet for Attenberg.
