I'm not sure what you call those large fishing nets that sweep the bottom of oceans floors in an attempt to capture mass quantities of fish, but I'd say that the curators from the NYFF certainly put this type of strategy into practice when setting up the line-up for the 46th edition to take place at the end of September until the midway point of October.
Aronofsky has been trying to snare a big genre property for years, flirting with the Batman franchise, Lone Wolf and Cub, and most recently Watchmen among others. The project’s $100 million budget is far and away the most money the director has had to play with; it will be exciting to see what he’ll do with it. While the producers intend to make a film that mirrors the original in tone and feel; I expect it to be very gritty, with more practical effects and less camp comedy ala The Dark Knight – which made a little bit of money this summer if I recall.
As usual, Wild Bunch comes to Cannes this year loaded up in film offerings with most notably three antcipated titles in post production status: Aronofsky's THE WRESTLER, Belge helmer Jaco Van Dormael's MR NOBODY and Claire Denis' WHITE MATERIAL. The Paris-based company has a heavy slate which is comprised of Cannes selected films and market projects.
