France-based Wild Bunch are the masters of their domain – we can forget about the horrible way Che fell victim to a bad market by remembering the success story of The Wrestler. They come to Cannes as usual with a ton of items in competition and a slate of films that gives buyers way too many options.
The Safdie brothers who closed the same sidebar last year with a short film and The Pleasure of Being Robbed have combined their efforts to bring another project in Go Get Some Rosemary, which oddly sounds like something my mother might have said when I was a young lad. The pair to watch out for in the section are Colossal Youth's director Pedro Costa who returns to Cannes with his docu on Jeanne Balibar called Ne change rien. Three year's back he got beat up by critics. Woman Is the Future of Man's Hong Sang-soo (who I originally balked at including in my predictions for the Main Comp) is finally going to showcase his latest work (Like You Know it All) in the 41st edition of the section
It was with hurricane-like winds rocking the outside of the Palais, that the winners were announced for the 61st edition, and surprisingly, the winners weren’t as political as what one my have thought. Sean Penn’s jury had to wait until the end of the festival to find its winner for The Palme d'Or and it was director Laurent Cantet (Heading South) who took the top honors with a portrait of a “school” year in the life of a classroom of young teens and a prof still not at wits end.
Here is the complete 2008 Cannes Line Up.
Main Competition:
Nuri Bilge Ceylan - Three Monkeys (Turkey-France-Italy) Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne - Le Silence De Lorna...
Before we begin what should be a grueling, exhausting, yet painlessly pleasurable coverage of the 61st edition of the Cannes film festival (I've got north of 40 films/events that I ambitiously want to cover), I first wanted to begin IONCINEMA.com's coverage of the fest with an overview of the four sections of the festival and what I predict should be critically well-received pictures to look out for. We first begin with the Critic's Week (47th Semaine Int. de la Critique) sidebar which has a distinctive Euro-flavoring this year.
