Like anyone else we look forward to the heavyweight selections in the Main Competition this year --- but what about the other sections? Blake Williams and I have our alternative lists ready for you --- a top 20 list of films that have caught our attention for reasons X, Y and Z. Without further ado, here is the list:
We're about 36 hours away from Cannes Film Festival's big unveiling of the 2011 line-up and while the Main Comp should bare very little surprises (see the math below), the one title whose status is still a mystery and could break into the 20 or so titles is Carlos Reygadas' Post Tenebras Lux.
The Berlin Film Festival begins today and in typical IONCINEMA.com fashion, I've decided to unveil my predictions for the 2011 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. I've taken the liberty at breaking down the predictions by what should logically fit into what sections: Main Comp, UCR and the Director's Fortnight sidebar.
Even though she has a French name, I was surprised to see that a festival showcasing the best in past and upcoming Quebecois cinema (Les Rendez-Vous Du Cinema Quebecois) had managed to lasso a very busy, legend producer in American Independent Cinema. For those who have seen clips of her masterclasses and/or have read two great books on what is it to be an indie producer know that Christine Vachon tells it likes it is.
This year’s spectrum section as a promising mix of world preems and is perhaps a stronger selection than what was offered same time last year and sadly the highlight of the section finds the last film from actor/director Adrienne Shelly.
