Typically, I'm not a fan of the omnibus, but I consider myself a fan to various degrees of the seven attached names in this pack. The untouched utilized backdrop of Havana is such a rich and rarely shot locale and a seven day Monday to Sunday narrative stretch and conjoining storyline and characters means the bookends of the film will feel a lot more natural. In give or take 364 days from now, the 65th edition of the Cannes film festival will be upon us. I know it's absurd, but there are some bonafide films in the works from some Cannes vets and according to these prognostications I supply below, we'll have one more heavyweight event with the possible participation from the likes of Abbas Kiarostami, Olivier Assayas, Paul Thomas Anderson and Hou Hsiao Hsien being joined by recent Palme d'Or winners (2008 and 2009) Laurent Cantet and Michael Haneke.
You can now add Carancho to the list of successful Argentinean films receiving a Hollywood makeover. Last month, Billy Ray signed up to pen the remake for The Secret in Their Eyes. This month the remake rights to the Cannes Un Certain Regard selection and Argentina’s rep for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar are controlled by Fine Cut and Crazy Heart helmer, Scott Cooper, is attached to direct the remake and if Jeff Bridges isn't busy this year, could easily step in the shoes of the protag that was played by Ricardo Darin.
I was wondering why Peter Mullan's Neds wasn't included in Venice. I was wondering why the Midnight Madness section didn't name Koen Mortier's latest. I was wondering why Cannes regular Bent Hamer wasn't in Cannes. TIFF's CWC section has all three high profile items, plus Venice Film Festival's Meek's Cutoff (Kelly Reichard) and Three (Tom Tykwer). Reichard will participate in Kelly Reichardt in a Mavericks discussion about the behind the scenes of her process.
Cannes announced 16 films in the Main Competition today and the Un Certain Regard is perhaps complete but could fit two more titles in, but as expected, Terrence Malick's film is still in limbo. Apart from that frustrating example, there are about three to five available slots in the Main Comp and some hefty titles that are missing in action. I've compiled a list below, but worth mentioning are blatant omissions such as Julian Schnabel's Miral, Kornel Mundruczo's Frankenstein Project, Ken Loach's Route Irish and perhaps even Bruce Robinson's The Rum Diary.
