Breaking out around the time where NYFF is on its last legs, Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (October 12 to 23) kicks in with about four times the size in volume, and obviously more of an eclectic range. This year is the festival's big 40 - and for the occasion they've commissioned some of the names who've been a part of the festival to each contribute a short film in the context of what is being called the "Cartes Blanches" series. Denis Côté, Deco Dawson, Sophie Deraspe, Rodrigue Jean, Zacharias Kunuk, Marie Losier, Catherine Martin, Bruce McDonald, Théodore Ushev and Denis Villeneuve will each submit a four minute short.

To memorialize the late Anime auteur Satoshi Kon (1963-2010), last week the Film Society of Lincoln Center put on a one-night retrospective featuring his first film, Perfect Blue (1998), and last (released) film Paprika (2006). The timing of something like this is never good per se, however, the two films exhibited on this night could not be more topical right now.

Almost one year to the date since it premiered In Competition at the Venice Film Festival, Tetsuo III: The Bullet Man has found a home with the IFC folks. Packaged along with the second installment, the deal appears to be a great buy for the new genre division simply called IFC Midnight.

This year the Coproduction Office come packing three titles – a pair in the Un Certain Regard section and a much anticipated Cannes supported, docu-essay Le Quattro Volte by Italian helmer Michelangelo Frammartino...and the last minute addition to the fest Tender Son - The Frankenstein Project which will probably see the director work on the film until the very last minute, hence the very late in the fest screening.
