One short-list nominated film and Cannes winner (final nine) that was noticeably absent from the winner’s circle was Xavier Beauvois’ Of Gods and Men which debuted domestically this past weekend (on the same weekend it picked up the Best Film award at France's Oscar ceremony equivalent).

It was in the script. I mean, with her dresses, Xavier really wanted something 1950s/1960s, because from that, he wanted to mix contemporary references. Because love has no age. Even as generations change, love is the same. It was a way to attribute to older generations who felt the same way about love.

Kudos to the AFI FEST for setting up an important sidebar that will expose the best that the next generation of filmmakers have to offer. Bumping up their crop of exciting new auteur cinema, sections labeled "Young Americans" and "New Auteurs" (Cannes heavy) are showcases you'll want to keep an eye on - I can vouch on a good chunk of titles already selected.

Last year the sales/production/distribution company hit a triple (in the prize category) with Dolan's I Killed My Mother, this year they move up a section into the UCR with Heartbeats (see pic above). Worth noting in the sales department is Antoine Blossier's debut horror film Prey (which I was hoping would find a spot in Cannes this year) and Julie Delpy is calling up her parents for a sequel to her rom com, 2 Days in Paris. with 2 Days in New York.
