Zooey is Janis

Penelope Spheeris’ next project has peace, love and harmony written all over it. The rock n’ roll savvy director of Wayne’s World has been set to direct the biopic of hippie songbird Janis Joplin, aptly titled Gospel According to Janis. Alan on the Ball with ‘Towelhead’

Alan Ball , the Oscar-winning screenwriter of American Beauty and the Emmy-winning Six Feet Under, will finally make his much anticipated big screen directorial debut with Towelhead, based on the novel by Alicia Erian. The script, which has been shelved since being optioned in 2004 while Ball wrapped up Six Feet Under, has found financing in the guise of Steven M. Rales, who will produce with Ball and Ted Hope. Scott Rudin, Peggy Rajski, and Anne Carey are the executive producers.

Grass Roots Tactics For ‘Ground Truth’

Squeaking and grinding, the wheel has begun to turn. The traditional Hollywood production path for profit and success is being turned and manipulated in ways that are at once feared and counted on. The Ground Truth is the first foray into writing and directing for Patricia Foulkrod , primarily known for producing more mainstream films like Crazy Like A Fox (2004). “Truth” will be shown in limited theatrical release, possibly as little as six US cities then will follow up with a nationwide series of screenings in homes, churches, hospitals, libraries and other community centers on October 11, the four-year anniversary of the authorization to use military force in Iraq. This concept of nearly “guerilla distribution” is new, but not unheard of. In early 2006 Steven Soderbergh utilized the concept for his reality appearing Bubble (2006). Focus Features CEO James Schamus said one of the main goals of the brief theatrical run is to drive home video sales. Organizations will be offered bulk rates on the Universal-distributed DVD, and Focus will continue promoting the film after its theatrical release has ended.

Interview: Neil Marshall

In 2002 a film by the title of Dog Soldiers made its debut on the festival circuit and went on to see a limited theatrical release and worldwide video/DVD distribution. It was the debut feature from writer/director Neil Marshall, about a group of hard-drinking, soccer-loving Scottish soldiers who, while on a seemingly routine training exercise in northern Scotland mountains, cross paths with a pack of lycanthropes (werewolves to the lay person), and must battle the beasts with everything from guns, knives, and grenades, to broadswords, makeshift flamethrowers, everyday household items, and when all else fails, hand to hand combat. Filled with audacious violence, a dark sense of humor, and loads of movie references (Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix, Jaws and Predator to name a few), Dog Soldiers garnered a substantial cult following among horror fans that flocked to the film like a mob of zombies to an end-of-the-world survivor with an empty shotgun and a broken leg.
