Wenders’ ‘Pina’ to Do Grand Jeté via Sundance Selects

The 3D cinematic experience is finally evolving and not a moment too soon. No longer reserved for animated franchises and gory slasher movie gimmicks, new technologies have allowed visionary filmmaker Wim Wenders to get in on the multidimensional game. Wenders’ latest documentary Pina was among the most talked about film at the paltry Berlin Film Festival where it had its world premiere back in February, and later this month audiences all over can see exactly what it is that everyone’s been talking about. The 3D documentary written and directed by Wenders, explores the work of legendary dancer and groundbreaking choreographer Pina Bausch (who passed away suddenly when the film was in pre-production back in 2009). Sundance Selects has acquired the U.S. rights to the Pina and this should come out a little after its planned European releases.

Gist: Made as a tribute to the dancer, the documentary showcases the work of the German modern dance choreographer Pina Bausch and how her unique creations transformed the language of dance and offer a visual experience like no other

Worth Noting: The award winning filmmaker whose resume includes classics like Wings of Desire and noteworthy documentaries such as Buena Vista Social Club, is the first to put out a 3D art film. We wisely included this among our Top 100 Most Anticipated films of the year.

Do We Care?: Dance has become a huge pop-culture phenomenon over the past few years. We’ve seen children and grown-ups dancing their way to stardom on reality TV shows, hip-hop dance movie franchises, even Black Swan got a piece of that dance pie. We’re sure dance buffs will probably adore this film, but we’ve got a feeling that Wenders’ doc will reach a much broader audience. You don’t have to be a die hard fan of modern dance to appreciate the trailer, even in two dimensions, it has us wanting more.
