She blasted onto the scene when she returned to the Directors’ Fortnight section in 2017 with I Am Not A Witch and it now appears that her next feature will be backed by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe’s Element Pictures label. Listed inside a recent Variety article, production on Zambian-Welsh filmmaker Rungano Nyoni‘s sophomore project On Becoming a Guinea Fowl would be imminent. We expect some official info via the trades to drop probably during the flurry of news bits during TIFF.
Nyoni was a film festival favorite with her shorts and then graduated into features receiving tons of support including the 2013 Cannes Cinefondation Residency. I Am Not A Witch was produced by Quiddity Films’ Emily Morgan and Clandestine Films Juliette Grandmont who may not return here, but her cinematographer David Gallego (who has Laura Mora’s Kings of the World and Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge to preem in the near future) might be available. We’ll be keeping tabs on any future developments.
