#85. The Rum Diary

Director/Writer: Bruce Robinson
Producers: Christi Dembrowski, Graham King, Robert Kravis, Anthony Rhulen and Depp
Distributor: Rights Available.

The Gist: This is about love, treachery and lust amid the palm tree-lined setting of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the 1950s. This is about a love triangle in the tale of a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp)…(more)

Cast: Johnny Depp, Giovanni Ribisi, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Amaury Nolasco and Richard Jenkins

List Worthy Reasons…: Last year we had it in our number 20 spot, and while a full year of waiting has slightly diminished our hunger for this Hunter S. Thompson adaptation, it still has plenty of elements working for it — great ensemble, return of a popular filmmaker, and the source material.

Release Date/Status?: No clue what the hold up is on the 45 million dollar production (Depp’s schedule?) which should have technically be released last year, perhaps GK Films will deal it to FilmDistrict but ideally they’d have a major release in a film festival beforehand. Fall festival season appears likely.
