The morning after NYFF’s premiere of the Director’s Fortnight’s selected horror film We Are What We Are from Mexican helmer Jorge Michel Grau. I had the chance to sit down one-on-one with him, well, plus his translator. During his Q&A the prior night, I realized we came from very similar backgrounds at least in what films we grew up on: we both used to watch really sick, disgusting Italian horror movies when we were way too young for that to be appropriate. Among the questions I asked him, I wanted to find out if he considered his film to be a full on “genre” film?, what his influences are?, discussed his representation of contemporary life in Mexico City, whether this family portrait is something he considered universal or specific to Mexico and finally, does the story apply to all classes systems?
