In an even split, and in two different waves, Italian filmmaker Mario Martone has populated the Un Certain Regard section with L’Amore molesto (1995) and Theatro di guerra (1998), then worked mostly as a stage director for operas before returning this time in the competition with 2022’s Nostagia (read ★★★ review) and now Fuori (which will receive its domestic release in Italy this month). A drama set in 1980s Rome, the titles means the word “Outside”. This book-to-film biographical drama chronicles a pivotal chapter in the life of feminist writer Goliarda Sapienza, celebrated for her posthumously published erotic masterpiece “The Art of Joy.” Played by Valeria Golino, Sapienza is depicted during a turbulent period after Italian publishers reject her seminal work. Destitute and disillusioned, she is arrested for stealing jewelry and lands in a Roman prison, where she forms an intense connection with Roberta (Matilda De Angelis), a seasoned criminal and political activist. Their bond only grows stronger after their release, shaping an unconventional and profound relationship. This is the film number fifteen in the competition of twenty-two.
In his first and only stint in competition with our 2022 Cannes Critics’ Panel, Nostalgia landed a respectable average of 2.8. This time out, the second competition film offering of the day didn’t play out like last time. With almost half of our jury taking in some Italian cinema, we have an average rating of 2.1.
