#82. Hong Khaou’s Lilting
Gist: Placed third on 2011 Brit List, with Ben Whishaw toplining, Lilting tells the story of a mother’s attempt at understanding who her son is after his untimely death. Her world is suddenly disrupted by the presence of his lover. Together, they attempt to overcome their grief whilst struggling against not having a shared language.
Prediction: Critics’ Week. Michael Winterbottom mentored the Cambodia-born, Vietnam-bred London-based filmmaker Hong Khaou (his 2011 short Spring, was selected for Sundance and Berlin) a true mishmash of a background just like the composition of the film itself — which commenced filming in November and which the filmmaker himself compares it stylistically to Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love. Like Broken in the previous year, the section unearths its fair share of talented U.K first-time feature-length filmmakers.
