2018 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Jordana Spiro’s Night Comes On

We were pleasantly destabilized by her third, Gummo-esque short film, and as I cited back after the 2013 Sundance edition, Skin (watch here) displayed all of her prowess in story and character development: “Spiro’s shot selections, editing and tone makes for a calling card item were industry vets will stand up and take notice.” Sundance folk did indeed take notice. Mostly a television actress with a handful of film parts in her more than decade long filmography, Jordana Spiro participated in 2014 Sundance Screenwriter, Director and Composer Labs and her co-writer on the project was also a 2014 Time Warner Fellow. Spiro (who was also the Adrienne Shelly Foundation Fellowship winner) began lensing Night Comes On (an in-depth detailed project description is worth the read) sometime in the month of April in Philadelphia. If included, easily one of my most anticipated indie items for the fest and certainly a huge breakout role for Dominique Fishback, but while we await confirmation line-up news, you can watch Spiro in Ozark.

Gist: Angel Lamere (Dominique Fishback) is released from juvenile hall on her 18th birthday with a singular focus: murder the man who killed her mother. That man is her father. Over the course of one day, she will encounter people from her past who unexpectedly awaken her deepest internal battles. These encounters, sometimes harsh, sometimes sublime, will both pull her away and push her towards her father’s execution. What was once a revenge fantasy has now become real in this odyssey where beauty and violence exist side by side.
