2011 Sundance Predictions: Julius Onah’s The Girl Is in Trouble

This Sundance edition should be a vintage one for 2010 members of Filmmaker Magazine 25 New Faces and this could possibly include, Julius Onah's The Girl Is in Trouble. A Graduate Film Program at NYU and supported by Spike Lee, he if quickly assembles his feature film debut, which also counts as his thesis film (Onah comes across as a workaholic) then Park City becomes a strong possibility.

2011 Sundance Predictions: Miranda July’s The Future

It will be one of the most sought after films to see and potentially buy - big question: what section will The Future show in? Miranda July's long awaited return since 2005's Me and You and Everyone We Know is a relationship comedy with Hamish Linklater toplining.

2011 Sundance Predictions: So Yong Kim’s For Ellen

I originally thought So Yong Kim's For Ellen would be ready for the fall film fest season, but I believe she would put on the producer's hat for hubby Bradley Rust Gray's Jack and Diane which shot this summer. Kim broke out at 2006 edition of Sundance with In Between Days and will be surely be welcomed with open arms with her first independent film to feature name talent in Paul Dano, Jon Heder, Jena Malone, Margarita Levieva and Dakota Johnson.

2011 Sundance Predictions: Sara Terry’s Fambul Tok

Not only does the Sundance Film Festival have the mandate to support burgeoning narrative filmmakers, but the fest is also the lieu where socially conscious/responsible documentary films make their mark. The Sundance Institute Documentary Film Grant and IFP Documentary Lab supported Fambul Tok certainly fits that bill. Directed by former Christian Science Monitor reporter turned filmmaker Sara Terry, this docu, which should have audiences bawling their eyes out, is also produced by a friend of the festival in Rory Kennedy.

2011 Sundance Predictions: Jacob Aaron Estes’ The Details

After no mention of the film during the 2010 film festival calendar year, my hunch is Jacob Aaron Estes might unveil The Details as a highly sought-after acquisitions title for back to back festivals located in Park City and Berlin. It would be a return to the place that helped launched his career - Estes premiered Mean Creek in Sundance back in '04, and with his long awaited and highly anticipated sophomore feature we find Sundance alumni in Elizabeth Banks, Tobey Maguire and Laura Linney.
