I was beginning to think that it would be the bring screen treatment of Paulo Coehlo's classic, The Alchemist that would get a green light first, after all The Weinsteins put in a huge announcement at Cannes that it was among their top priorities. It is instead 11 Minutes (re-named and not to be confused with the recently released docu film about a fashion designer's nightmare in Gotham) that will see the day of light with an international cast in hometown girl Alice Braga, France's Vincent Cassel, Italy's Riccardo Scarmarcio and Mickey Rourke on board Coehlo's other classic.

Picked up by Lionsgate Films exactly two years ago, despite having an unsexy Russell Crowe in the lead, John Polson's Tenderness has been collecting dust and judging by the film's trailer below, it could be argued that this looks like straight to video fair than an improvement on Swimfan and Hide and Seek. Until now it hadn't seen the day of light having been showed solely in market festival screenings, but a recent submission to the MPAA board for ratings purposes and a world preem back in Sydney means we can expect this to hit theaters.

From March 1st 2009 to July 15th 2009, the filmmakers mentioned below will be part of Cannes' 2009 La Résidence de la Cinéfondation - a programme which helps young filmmakers write the screenplay and prepare for the production of their first or second feature film. Gilles Jacob and jury chose from over 160 applicants. This year's batch of unknown filmmakers come from Central America and Europe.
