San Fran Film Critics’ Circle back homegrown biopic Milk
It would have been a surprise if the S.F. Film Critics' Circle would have snubbed one of their own. It helps that Gus Van Sant did an excellent job with Milk. While Van Sant’s biopic picked up four awards, the wins worth signaling out is the Best Supporting Actress kudos for Marisa Tomei in The Wrestler and a Best Documentary win for quasi-experimental pic from Guy Maddin (My Winnipeg).
Slumdog and Happy-Go-Lucky are tops at Satellite Awards
Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire picked up the best drama and the top comedy award went to Happy-Go-Lucky for this year’s International Press Academy's 13th annual Satellite Awards. Noteworthy accolades that differ form many critic’s circles are the Actor in a Supporting Role which goes to Michael Shannon’s perf in Revolutionary Road and Best Foreign Language Film went to Italy’s Gomorrah.
Boston Critics claim ‘Slumdog’ and ‘WALL-E’ as year’s Best
The Boston Society of Film Critics split the vote -- Wall-E and Slumdog Millionaire tied for Best Film honors. Curiously, it’s Gus Van Sant’s work in Paranoid Park and Milk that received kudos in some main categories.
La Vie Moderne claims Louis Delluc
The Louis Delluc prize which I thought was going to be bestowed on Laurent Cantet’s Palme D’or winner has actually gone to another Cannes-selected title in Raymond Depardon's La Vie Moderne. The prestigious award is given to the best French film of the year
