Sex, Lies, and Videotape returns to Sundance
If you had to define the history of American Independent Film with a select few titles you’d want to mention Steven Soderbergh’s 1989 film. Sundance Institute announced today that Steven Soderbergh's sex, lies, and videotape (Sundance Film Festival Audience Award Winner) and Wendell B. Harris's Chameleon Street (1990 Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize Winner) have been selected for the Festival's From the Collection screenings.
Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon and Doubt lead Golden Globe’s 66th noms
Today’s announcement comes with little surprise, but I’m glad to see that Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon are leveling the playing field sort of speak. While Doubt picked up 4 nominations it couldn’t crack the top 5 noms for Best Dramatic Feature and Milk was almost totally taken off the score card – only Sean Penn got a nod.
Julian Farino Finds ‘Oranges’ are Ripe for Filming
Television director Julian Farino is being considered for directing duties for the second hottest script (according to the 2008 Blacklist) of the year. With twenty plus episodes of HBO’s Entourage under his belt, the Farino would make Oranges his next project and begin lensing the indie film sometime this year.
Milk is Warm for New York Film Critics Circle
East Coast critics gave kudos to the West Coast-set story from Gus Van Sant – the NYFCC gave year end wins in three categories (Best Film, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor), while Happy-Go-Lucky receives two wins in the Director and Actress category. Best First Film honors went to Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River and the group did not forget about the beginning of the year, awarding Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days as the Best Foreign Film of the year.
