The upcoming edition of the Sundance Film Festival will open with a documentary film from the filmmaker who wowed audiences with the visually engaging, critically acclaimed The Kid Stays in the Picture. This will be the third visit for Brett Morgen, who also showcased the Robert Evans docu biopic and the 1999 Sundance Film Festival On the Ropes.
Oscar doc finalists: From 81 to 15
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films in the Documentary Feature category will advance in the voting process for the upcoming Oscars. The final five noms will be announced on January 23. Here the are the 15:

In the foreign film category, this year’s favorite is most likely going to come from Sony Pictures Classics’ hand. Not only are they holding a pair of pocket kings in Zhang Yimou’s The Curse of the Golden Flower and Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book, but they are also holding pocket aces with Pedro’s Volver and in some circles the best picture of the year on the international scene with Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others. Today were previewing the North American one sheet.
