TIFF 2011: Goldthwait, Sanchez and Wingard: Midnight Madness Strong on U.S Indie
In the hours leading up to the unveiling, TIFF Programmer's Colin Geddes teased twitter followers on the make-up of his bijou section. Nine world premieres and one item from this year's SXSW in Ben Wheatley's Kill List are the make-up for this year's ten nights of Midnight Madness screenings, and of the 10-pack, film buyers have eight available items for North American pick-up with several US options, excluding Kill List which belongs to IFC Midnight and Livid early on) which Dimension grabbed early on.

We had an smidgen of an idea that the Real to Reel section might be especially strong this year, but with the likes of Frederick Wiseman, Rithy Panh, Jonathan Demme, Werner Herzog, Jessica Yu, Alex Gibney, Joe Berlinger, Ron Fricke, Nick Broomfield and Michael Glawogger, we're now beginning to think that Thom Powers' section has not only outclassed Toronto's sister event Hot Docs, but just about any other doc-related film festival.

While last year we got such items as Monsters, Our Day Will Come and Adam Wingard's A Horrible Way to Die (he returns to the line-up this year in the Midnight Madness section), this edition appears to be a cut above, they've got a pair of excellent features we caught back in Cannes with Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31 (Un Certain Regard) and Justin Kurzel's Snowtown (Critics' Week). A highly touted item from Venice has also made the cut, and we're especially glad that we'll be able to see Tahar Rahim violently and emotionally lose it in Love and Bruises - Lou Ye's first film in another language and perhaps his "comeback" film of sorts.
Sony Think Timing is Best for Ol Parker’s ‘Now Is Good’
Always a good sign when your sophomore project gets picked up at the midway point of production, as is the case for Ol Parker's London-shot Now Is Good. Bought by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, this could possibly follow other pick-ups to be packaged as a Sony Pictures Classics project later down the line. The tear-jerker drama is comprised of Dakota Fanning in the lead, with supporting perfs from Jeremy Irvine, Paddy Considine, Olivia Williams and Kaya Scodelario, who we look forward in seeing in Andrea Arnold's upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
