Tracking Shot: Walter Hill, Ry Russo-Young & Alexandros Avranas Shooting in November

“Tracking Shot” is a top of month featurette here on IONCINEMA.com that looks at the projects that are moments away from lensing. This November, we’ve got a fivesome of projects that we feel are worth signaling out, but before we put the focus on those, the previous month was a rather fruitful one for mostly indiewood film productions. Films that we’ll be seeing in 2016 and which are for the most part still filming include: Mark Williams‘ workplace drama The Headhunter’s Calling (with Alison Brie, Gretchen Mol, Gerard Butler, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina), Philippe Falardeau‘s bio boxing drama The Bleeder (with Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Elisabeth Moss), Taron Lexton’s coming-of-ager In Search of Fellini (with Ksenia Solo, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Maria Bello), Kevin Tent‘s Black List scripted rom-com (with Domhnall Gleeson, Christina Applegate, Thomas Haden Church, Nina Dobrev), Sophie Brooks‘ NYC set Euro-fizzled comedy, The Boy Downstairs (with Zosia Mamet, Deirdre O’Connell, Matthew Shear, Diana Irvine), Marc Webb’s Kramer vs. Kramer-like Gifted (with Chris Evan, Jenny Slate, Octavia Spencer, McKenna Grace), Oren Uziel‘s 2009 Black List item Shimmer Lake (with Rainn Wilson, Wyatt Russell, Mark Rendall, Stephanie Sigman, Rob Corddry, Ron Livingston, Wyatt Russell, John Michael Higgins, Adam Pally), Madeleine Olnek‘s take on Emily Dickinson (with Molly Shannon, Susan Ziegler, Amy Seimetz, Brett Gelman, Sasha Frolova) and finally, the much anticipated Barry Jenkins‘ coming-of-age drama Moonlight with Naomie Harris, Andre Holland, Mahershala Ali and the screen debut for Janelle Monae.

Topping our radar for November we see a personality moving into his fifth decade of filmmaking. Walter Hill reteams with Aliens franchise figure Sigourney Weaver on Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale.We read it as a mix between The Skin I Live In and La Femme Nikita, the project finally lassoed Michelle Rodriguez in the lead role — actresses Freida Pinto and Andrea Riseborough were once considered for the role. Also in the high-octane end of productions, we find A Wolf at the Door and Netflix’s “Narcos” helmer Fernando Coimbra move into the bullet riddled zone known as the Sunni Triangle of Iraq. Titled Sand Castle, his sophomore feature includes troops such as Nicholas Hoult, Henry Cavill and Logan Marshall-Green.

In indiewood productions we have Sabyn Mayfield making his directorial debut with Boomtown – which features another Narco and one of our faves in Boyd Holbrook, while Ry Russo-Young (2012’s Nobody Walks) finally moves behind the camera again with Before I Fall, a book-to-screen adaptation by Maria Maggenti with Zoey Deutch in the lead while

After receiving tons of film fest accolades for his Miss Violence, Greek helmer Alexandros Avranas crosses into True Crimes. His third feature film is based on a New Yorker article which centres on a Polish murder investigation turning to clues found in a novelist’s book that bear a bizarre resemblance to the case. Jim Carrey toplines alongside Agata Kulesza, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kati Outinen, Zbigniew Zamachowski and Marton Czokas.
