Out Stealing Horses

Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland reunites with Stellan Skarsgard for the fifth time in Out Stealing Horses (which follows their work in Zero Kelvin, Aberdeen, A Somewhat Gentle Man and In Order of Disappearance), which also stars Man’s Bjorn Floburg. Produced by Turid Overseen and Hakon Overas of 4½ , it’s an adaptation of the 2003 international bestseller by Per Petterson, which was crowned “Norway’s biggest international literary success of all time.” Also among the cast are Danica Curcic (Silent Heart, 2014) and Anders Baasmo Christiansen (Kon-Tiki, 2012). Moland’s sophomore film Zero Kelvin won a Special Mention at San Sebastian in 1995 and Aberdeen (2000) competed in Karlovy Vary. Since then Moland has thrice competed in Berlin, with 2004’s The Beautiful Country, 2010’s A Somewhat Gentle Man, and 2014’s In Order of Disappearance (read review) which has received a Liam Neeson headlined English language treatment titled Cold Pursuit, also directed by Moland.

Gist: In Petterson’s drama, Skarsgard stars as a grieving widower who moves to the countryside only to have memories from his past rekindled following a chance encounter.

Release Date/Prediction: Moland has had a busy year, filming the English language remake of In Order of Disappearance after Out Stealing Horses, which filmed through winter and summer seasons in 2018, ending in July. With a theatrical release scheduled in Norway for March 2019 we expect Moland to compete for the fourth time in Berlin.
