Introducing Our Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2021

Introducing Our Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2021

As we bid adieu and wave good riddance to 2020 it’s with measured optimism that we tread/transition lightly into the new year of cinema. Undeniably there are a significant number of film projects that were supposed to premiere in ’20 (and several of these projects will have benefitted from more fine-tuning) that will likely give toppers at Berlin, Cannes, Locarno, Venice and TIFF some true conundrums in terms of programming. Simply put, if there is even a quasi return to normal, 2021 will be stacked in both quantity and quality and saying that’ll be a vintage year is an understatement.

Welcome to our annual Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2021 list where we take inventory of global cinema offerings that have yet to receive a premiere and if safety measures permit it, we’ll get to “unmask” these oeuvres at major film festivals and theatres alike. Curated by Nicholas Bell and myself, Eric Lavallée, we celebrate cinema by putting the spotlight on one hundred future film projects worth keeping tabs on but before this, we’ll put out two days worth of films that didn’t make the cut. A special word of thanks goes to our friends at Mubi for helping us stay sane in 2020 and for supporting us with this annual hodgepodge.
