Top 150 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2020: #57. Pieces of a Woman – Kornél Mundruczó
Pieces of a Woman
Hungarian auteur Kornél Mundruczó will make his English language debut in 2020 with the Canadian production Pieces of a Woman, which has landed Vanessa Kirby (she’ll be seen in 2020’s Untitled Adam Leon Project and in Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come) and Shia LaBeouf in the leads. Produced by Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson and Aaron Ryder through Little Lamb Productions, the script is penned by Kate Weber, who wrote his critically acclaimed 2014 title White God (read review). Mundruczo won an award out of Locarno for his sophomore feature Pleasant Days in 2002 and has since been a feature at Cannes. 2005’s Johanna premiered in Un Certain Regard, as did 2014’s White God, which won top prize in the sidebar. He’s competed thrice at Cannes, with 2008’s Delta (winning the FIPRESCI Prize), 2010’s Tender Son – The Frankenstein Project and 2017’s Jupiter’s Moon.
Gist: Kirby stars as a woman in a state of grief after her home birth goes awry as she wrestles with her relationship with her husband an estranged mother.
Release Date/Prediction: Already familiar with the material as he brought it to the stage in 2018, filming commenced on Pieces of a Woman in Montreal, December 2019. While Cannes may be unlikely in 2020, Mundruczo could certainly make a play for his first time in Venice, though this will surely end up in TIFF 2020.
