Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2021: #86. Tuva Novotny’s Diorama

Date:

Diorama

Although we had initially hoped this would be a 2020 release, it seems Swedish actress turned director Tuva Novotny is likely to have her third feature in 2021 with Diorama, which is being produced by Nordisk Film. The Covid situation pushed production but the filmmaker is staying busy as she also co-wrote Jonas Alexander Arnby’s upcoming film, In the Eyes of God. No cast or crew have not yet been announced on Diorama.

Having balanced an impressive number of projects in front of and behind the camera over the past several years, Novtony’s 2018 debut Blindspot, shot in real-time in one take, competed in San Sebastian, taking home Best Actress for Novotny and Pia Tjelta. Her 2019 feature Britt-Marie Was Here was released in September 2019 courtesy of Cohen Media Group and she’s starred in a number of recent notable features, including Borg vs. McEnroe (2017), Annihilation (2018) and Jonas Alexander’s Exit Plan (2019).

Gist: Novotny’s latest aims to take a look at the social conventions which have allowed for humans to believe monogamy is actually conducive to our nature. The project has been described as a parallel story including a couple and the course of their relationship as well as the behavior of animals.

Release Date/Prediction: According to interviews with Novotny, production was moved to Fall of 2020, which could potentially make Diorama a prime candidate for TIFF’s resumed Platform program in 2021.
