2013 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Gregg Araki’s White Bird in a Blizzard

Date:

#67. Gregg Araki’s White Bird in a Blizzard

Gist: Based on the novel by Laura Kasischke, the narrative follows an adolescent female whose life is turned upside down by the disappearance of her mother, but perhaps not in the ways one would expect. Curiously unaffected at first, going on about life with her father, she begins to have terrifying dreams concerning her mother crying for help, which instigates her to dig deeper and stumble on a chilling discovery.

Prediction: While Araki’s last film, Kaboom, screened out of competition in 2010 and was relatively well reviewed, it seemed like a rehash of his rebellious pansexual streak populating some of his work in the 90s. We’re excited to see him return to exciting source material for adaptation and hope he can work the magic that he did for his best film, 2004’s Mysterious Skin. And once again, Araki has a supremely exciting cast with Eva Green and Shailene Woodley as mom and daughter, along with Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, and Christopher Meloni as supporting cast. We’re predicting Directors’ Fortnight.
