2026 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 5 – László Nemes’ ‘Moulin’

Four films in and his second trip to the Cannes competition section, Hungarian filmmaker László Nemes began his career by winning the Grand Prix for Son of Saul (2015). He landed in Venice with films two and three with 2018’s Sunset and 2025’s Orphan. A cinema that looks at individuals trapped inside historical catastrophe, fractured perceptions and the search for dignity amid chaos, for this time out her revisits the past once again with the historical psychological drama pre-WWI Budapest for Moulin. This follows Jean Moulin, who is dropped into Nazi-occupied France to help bring the Resistance groups together for Charles de Gaulle. Even though he tries to stay hidden, he is eventually betrayed and handed over to the Gestapo in Lyon, led by the brutal Klaus Barbie. Moulin is tortured again and again but never gives in. His fortitude inspires the Resistance and helps spark a renewed fight for freedom in France. We find Gilles Lellouche, Lars Eidinger, Louise Bourgoin and Félix Lefebvre here. This is competition film #10 of 22.

Having a landed an average score of 3.4 for his Son of Saul, for Moulin (the first of three films feature in comp today) is currently riding with an average score of 2.5 with just a handful of grades in our inbox.
