2022 San Sebastian: Barragán’s Octopus Skin, Markowicz’s Charcoal & Martelli’s 1976 Populate Horizontes Latinos

Juan Pablo González‘s Sundance winning Dos Estaciones, Manuela Martelli‘s Quinzaine section winning 1976, Andrés Ramírez Pulido‘s Critics’ Week winner La Jauría, Carolina Markowicz‘s Platform (TIFF) competing Charcoal and Ana Cristina Barragán‘s Octupus Skin are all part of the dozen films selected for the Horizontes Latinos line-up at the 2022 San Sebastian International Film Festival. Clearly a section filled with 2022 film festival riches, the section will open with Patricio Guzmán’s My Imaginary Country – a Cannes entry that Icarus Films will premiere next month.

It’s worth noting that Barragán’s Octopus Skin (aka La Piel Pulpo) (also a Guadalajara Film Festival post prod fund winner) is one of four films featured in this year’s Horizontes line-up that screened in last year’s WIP Latam. That film tells the story of twins growing up on a rocky island who share an uncommonly intimate relationship. Another WIP alumni is Carlos Lechuga’s Vicenta B. (a Cuba/Colombia/Norway/France coproduction) — a story set in Cuba about the titular Vicenta B – a respected “santera” in Havana who has the gift of clairvoyance. While her business thrives, she hopes that her son continues the family tradition of helping others. But he decides to emigrate and Vicenta finds herself in a crisis of faith and loses her gift.

Eric Lavallée

Eric Lavallée is the founder, CEO, editor-in-chief, film journalist and critic at IONCINEMA.com (founded in 2000). Eric is a regular at Sundance, Cannes and TIFF. He has a BFA in Film Studies at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. In 2013 he served as a Narrative Competition Jury Member at the SXSW Film Festival. He was an associate producer on Mark Jackson's This Teacher (2018 LA Film Festival, 2018 BFI London). In 2022 he served as a New Flesh Comp for Best First Feature at the 2022 Fantasia Intl.
