Behind the Ruins: Sandra Hüller Drives Black Buick in Pawlikowski’s Post-War Odyssey ‘1949’

Paweł Pawlikowski‘s Fatherland has indeed moved into production – just now its being called 1949 and its got the weighty cast of Sandra Hüller, August Diehl, Anna Madeley, Devid Striesow, Theo Trebs, and Hanns Zischler. Deadline reports that the film will shoot in Poland, Germany, and Italy. Will he and cinematographer Lukasz Zal go for an Ida 2015) and Cold War (2018) type look? Production just began. Mubi is behind this one.

This is set at the height of the Cold War, 1949 centres on the relationship between the writer Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller); actress, journalist and rally driver, as they embark on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a Germany in ruins – from U.S. dominated Frankfurt to Soviet controlled Weimar. The novel followed Mann’s life from his childhood in Lübeck, through his marriage in Munich, his opposition to the Nazi regime, and his subsequent exile in the United States.

1949 will be produced by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli of Our Films, Ewa Puszczynsk of Extreme Emotions, Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger of Nine Hours, and Circle One’s Lorenzo Gangarossa. The creative team includes cinematographer Lukasz Zal, costume designer Aleksandra Staszko, editor Piotr Wójcik, production designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński.
