Before last week came to a close, a small blurb within a larger article revealed a name that I had been completely erased from thought. She was part of a clan of Sundance filmmakers who were involved in independent film when it had yet to meet big paydays and box office expectations. The name Allison Anders may not have been active in indie filmmaking as of late, the second half of her career has been mostly television work (Sex in the City), but she claimed the top prize at Sundance with Gas, Food Lodging (which beat out Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs) and her follow up films Mi vida loca, the Sundance kids crappy collaboration Four Rooms (1995) and Grace of My Heart (1996) showed the promise …and then she vanished (some of her backstory is well documented in Peter Biskind’s Down & Dirty Pictures). Well actually, with the exception of the very personal Things Behind the Sun in 2001, Allison Anders hasn’t touched feature film and going back to the blurb, DeFina Film Productions has teamed with Lisa Saltzman on 6 Foot Rule which has Anders is in talks to direct. Could this be the director’s first film in almost a decade?
