Dafoe & Gainsbourg Make Deal With the ‘Antichrist’

Date:

Full disclosure: I absolutely loathe Lars von Trier. I find him to be an insufferable prick as a person and as a filmmaker his utter contempt for cinema renders his films practically unwatchable. Don’t even get me started on that Dogme 95 garbage. So whenever he announces a new project I die a little inside. The pain continues with the news that Willem Dafoe (who last worked with LVT on Manderlay) and Charlotte Gainsbourg have signed on to star in Antichrist, the Danish douchebag’s long talked about return to horror. Though I would argue all of his films have been a kind of horror onto humanity, but I digress.

The odd couple will play grieving parents who retreat to a cabin getaway deep in the woods following the death of their child. The fortress of solitude becomes a house of horrors as the couple discovers the world as we know it is ruled by the Devil himself. Looks like The Last Temptation of Christ wasn’t exactly the end of Dafoe’s holy work.

Production on the $11 million English language film will start in Germany by the end of this month for an ’09 release. With any luck Lars will be struck by a bolt of lightning, saving us all from further damnation at his hands.
