Funny Story Might Continue for Roberts and Galifinakis in Coffey’s ‘Adult World’

With roles in six films last year, it looks like Emma Roberts doesn’t have plans to slow down anytime soon. While she’ll probably lose out in the race among young Hollywood starlets to nab the lead in the much talked about Hunger Games, Roberts has a more mature role to focus on with Adult World. Roberts is to be joined by Shiloh Fernandez and there are unconfirmed reports that It’s Kind of a Funny Story co-star Zach Galifinakis is set to join the troupe. The coming-of-age drama will be helmed by Ellie Parker writer/director Scott Coffey and is being produced by Infinity Media.

Gist: A Stanford graduate with hopes of being a great poet, discovers that adult life is not conducive to achieving her dreams. The Ivy League grad winds up working as a clerk in a mom and pop adult bookstore.

Worth Noting: Coffey got his start in front of the camera and has dozens of acting credits to his name. In 2001, he got behind the lens to direct the short film Ellie Parker which, four years later, was made into a feature of the same name starring his dear friend Naomi Watts. The film, about a struggling actress, premed at Sundance but went unnoticed when it opened on six screens back in 2006. We fully expect to see Watts makes a cameo appearance in the film.

Do We Care?: We’ve seen Roberts try to change her sweet Nancy Drew image latching onto tons of indie project (with Lymelife being the only notable title worth mentioning) including when she played a troubled teen who cuts herself in last years’ It’s Kind of a Funny Story — we didn’t really buy anything in that film. Dramas aren’t really her strong suit and coming-of-age items such as Homework aren’t doing her favours either. With Roberts in a “grown up” and “title” role we hope she deliver the goods before we finally decide to throw in the towel. We interviewed Coffey back in 2005 and he hasn’t been able to mount a project since – so we’re definitely in his corner.
