Interview: Julia Garner (Martha Marcy May Marlene)

In the same manner that Winter’s Bone was Jennifer Lawrence’s claim to fame, Sean Durkin’s directorial debut Martha Marcy May Marlene is actress Elizabeth Olsen’s calling card role, but its difficult to not take notice of another newbie in the presence of Julia Garner. Martha Marcy May Marlene happens to be blessed with an uncharacteristically star packed cast for an indie of this size, so supporting role players such as Louisa Krause (see my other interview here) and Garner are not the ones most would think to write up for this film that’s already been getting major post-festival buzz.

It’s clear each of these actors have been cast for their unique looks, both angelic in their own ways. Garner is 17-years-old with a powerful presence that she seems to not even be aware of. For Garner it’s obviously the hair. She has that kind of hair that she’ll be known forever for in her career. This is Garner’s first feature film, but she’s up for two roles coming up that are hush-hush at the time of this article. Either way, I’m pleased to mention that she’ll be treating their careers with the right kind of respect rather than just heading out to LA to do rom-coms.
