Live from Cannes: Dispatch 1

Date:

In the Mood for Cannes. I arrived on May 17 and checked in my cheap hotel and got my pass. The beautiful sleepy town is turned into a metropolis overnight with the thousands of people in town either for hard work (like me) or for having fun and partying. There's something for everybody. The town is covered with the official posters and the one that caught my eye is one the most beatiful posters ever of this or any other festival. It's a still from "In the Mood for Love" by this year's president of jury Wong Kar Wai which means is the president of Cannes and Cinema. Everybody agrees that this year is a strong competition year with masters and young filmmakers. As who eventually will win, remains to be seen. I watched so far Lou Ye's "Summer Palace" and Pedro Almodovar's "Volver", while I loved both, the first one didn't seemed to be liked as much as the latter one. It's too premature to say anything. Stay tuned for more.
