Morgan and Gavron making the move from Brick Lane to ‘Suffragette’ City

Chemistry isn’t only found between actors on-screen. The chemistry between a screenwriter and director can be just as integral to a film’s potential success. We’ll soon see if such is the case for this pair of creative minds. Variety reports that the writer/director force behind Brick Lane, Abi Morgan and Sarah Gavron (picture above), will be teaming up again for the upcoming drama Suffragettes.

The film is being developed by Focus Features which is another reunion of sorts for Morgan as they were co-producers on the upcoming sex addiction drama Shame which she co-wrote with director Steve McQueen. Pic is financed by Ruby Lane (who produced Brick Lane) as well as Film4.

Gist: A drama set in the early 20th century about a group of militant British women who fought for the right to vote.

Worth Noting: With two scripts currently in production set for release later this year and at least three more in development, Morgan’s stock is rising fast. Not only did the BAFTA award winning writer pen McQueen’s Shame, our most anticipated film of 2011, she also scripted the Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep.

Do We Care?: Films about women uniting and finding their inner strength to fight for what they believe in are no new thing. Just like Sally Field in Norma Rae or more recently, Sally Hawkins in Made in Dagenham, we’re sure some fierce performances will come out of this historic drama. It’s a story that needs to be told and even in its early stages (Morgan has just completed the first draft of the script) we think there’s a lot of potential behind this film. We’re ready for our history lesson.
