It was hard to pick this one as the best film of the year. I really admire Kwok and Cheng’s courage to make this film, and I think they totally didn’t disappoint and in fact surprised a lot of people with it. The box office might not do this film justice, and I could see thousands and more people drawn to the dazzling Kung Fu action of Ip Man 2 instead.
No surprises at the 35th Cesars, as A Prophet cleaned up in all major categories it was nominated in: Best Film, Best Director (Audiard), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Stephane Fontaine), Best Editing (Juliette Welfling), Best Art Direction (Michel Barthelemy) and last but not least, one of my top 5 performance of the year, Niels Arestrup won for Best Supporting...
Can't say there are many surprises with today's list, we discussed possible spots for Jacques Rivette, Michael Moore, Werner Herzog, Michele Placido, Todd Solondz, Jaco van Dormael, Patrice Chereau, Fatih Akin, Claire Denis and John Hillcoat's The Road (yes, there is a Santa Clause) beforehand.
I'm not sure what you call those large fishing nets that sweep the bottom of oceans floors in an attempt to capture mass quantities of fish, but I'd say that the curators from the NYFF certainly put this type of strategy into practice when setting up the line-up for the 46th edition to take place at the end of September until the midway point of October.
