It's probably too early to call 'Year of the Decade', but 2011 is certain to be a major contender for that prize eight years from now; at the moment, it's at least the best since 2007, which did battle with 2006 for the king of the previous decade. But I'm getting ahead of myself, jumping the gun a bit to look at the big picture, when in fact, this has been a year of many great small ones.
While I've yet to see the doc myself (I reference Claire Denis' White Material when I think of what the film might hold narratively), when the Cinema Eye Honor Noms were released I was surprised to see that, despite the positive buzz, Lucy Bailey and Andrew Thompson's Mugabe and the White African only manage to grab one nomination. Clearly the film is a favorite for the 2009 edition of the IDA Awards - it picked up three nominations in the Feature Documentary, ABCNews VideoSource Award an the Pare Lorentz Award categories.
In the post screening Q&A, Chris Smith's noted that a “black cloud” has been hanging over the project – whatever his hurdles were, the forecast looks pretty darn good, in my estimation this might be the doc film that comes out of TIFF with the best of chances for a theatrical release.
Chris Smith may have wanted to close the books on his documentary filmmaking portion of his career, but when one falls on a charismatic and controversial person such as Michael Ruppert, I guess you hit the breaks, hire a great directory of photography to help in Edward Lachman and you make sure that you don't run out of film.
