Cannes: Competition Line-Up

First reaction: non-surprise. Many of the films mentioned below were tagged to be amongst the final choices – and the ones that I thought were going to break into the fest (namely a couple of American pics) look to be headed to Italy’s Venice film fest in the fall. Curse of the Golden Flower one-sheet

Its another duo combo release this year for Zhang Yimou. After doubling up in 2004 with the North American release of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, this year the Sony Pictures Clasics label gave us Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles and the upcoming Curse of the Golden Flower. Today we received the one sheet for the fantasy period film.

1st Look: The Lives of Others one-sheet

In the foreign film category, this year’s favorite is most likely going to come from Sony Pictures Classics’ hand. Not only are they holding a pair of pocket kings in Zhang Yimou’s The Curse of the Golden Flower and Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book, but they are also holding pocket aces with Pedro’s Volver and in some circles the best picture of the year on the international scene with Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others. Today were previewing the North American one sheet.
