Guaranteed to be one of the most controversial films in years, A Serbian Film is nothing if not intense in its brutal imagery and fervent in its social commentary. Thankfully, director/producer/co-screenwriter Srdjan Spasojevic, co-screenwriter Aleksandar Radivojevic, and producer Nikola Pantelic were on hand to explain some of that commentary at the film’s Canadian premiere at Fantasia. We were there and managed to capture some of it for posterity.
In a lengthy Q&A session after the screening, Radivojevic defended the extreme violence and disturbing situations in A Serbian Film, explaining that it’s all a metaphor for current living conditions in Serbia, and that the powers that be screw you as soon as you’re out of the womb and continue screwing you for life, not even stopping after you’re dead. This dark outlook on life aside, the tone of the session was surprisingly light considering the intensity of the film itself. Here’s our review.
